Whether performance testing an application or testing a network for its ability to transport different traffic types, the best way to do so is to emulate the network, its various characteristics as well as the impairments that may be found on the production network. These can range from bandwidth constraint, congestion, latency, packet loss, and out-of-sequence packets.

Some traffic types can deal with some of the impairments whilst other types cannot so it is best to test the application or network traffic in the conditions it will be exposed to. Considering that the requirements for a particular test could be as simple as a point-to-point link test or as complex as a Software-Defined Test Network, using the production network is not ideal at all and building a test network is not commercially viable.
